Northeastern Exteriors Materials
Reclaimed Materials
Foundation Stone
The stone reclaimed from historic foundations is primarily field stone which is
found locally throughout Western New York. The stone varies in color, shape, and
size, providing the ability to create a distinctive stone structure rich in history.
Foundation stones can be used for retaining walls, stone sculptures and accent details.
Cobblestone
Typically found in old city streets from the early twentieth century, rectangular
cobblestones can range in size, texture, and color. Cobblestones that once were
ruled by horse and carriage can enhance the beauty of a new garden path, driveway
or patio.
Slate & Flagstone
Urban sidewalks once slate or cut flagstone are often replaced with concrete, leaving
these precious stones available to be reclaimed. Typically grayish-blue, these stones
can be layed or stacked to create excellent pathways, patios, walls and stepping
stones.
Brick Pavers
With uniform size, shape and color, this popular building material was commonly
used in the early twentieth century for roadways and buildings. Reclaimed bricks
exhibit character with unique stampings, markings and other signs of previous life.
Brick pavers create uniform, level surfaces for pathways, patios and driveways.
Natural Materials
Flagstone
A relative to granite, flagstone has a strength and durability quality and a variety
of colors ranging from red, black, mauve, buckskin and blue-grey. The most common
stone in the Northeast is often referred to as Pennsylvania Blue Flagstone which
is cut out of quarries in huge blocks. Flagstone can be cut into geometric shapes
or installed in its natural “irregular” shape. Common uses include stacked retaining
walls, patios, paths and stepping stones.
River Rock
Collected from river and stream beds, river rocks vary in color and size from
a few inches in diameter to a few feet. The unmistakable quality of river rock is
rounded edges from constant water erosion to the stone. These stones are often used
as decorative accents, retaining walls and sculptures.
Boulders
Large scale rocks often referred to as boulders are available in a variety of sizes,
shapes and colors. These massive rocks can weigh several hundred pounds requiring
heavy equipment to manipulate placement. Retaining walls, pillars, sculptures and
accents are often where these rocks are used to create depth to any outdoor project.
Gravel
This stone is ideal for a number of situations including the construction of pathways,
dog areas, and will also assist with general drainage issues. Gravel can range in
color and size with some fairly large rocks, and while not particularly decorative
it is more for practical purposes rather used to add color to your landscape.
Cast Concrete Stone & Pavers
Often used for their uniform shape and color, concrete stones and pavers create
excellent patios, paths and driveways. With a variety of manufacturers, cast concrete
stones are available in a wide range of colors, textures and sizes.
